Sunset Lounge
The Concept: "Eternal Golden Hour"
The Sunset Lounge is not just a place to watch the sun go down; it is a space designed to capture the feeling of that fleeting, magical moment where the light turns amber and the air cools. Located in West Palm Beach, the design bridges the gap between the historic charm of the 1920s boom-era architecture and the modern, coastal sophistication of today’s Palm Beach.
The narrative is built on "Tropical Brutalism meets Old Florida Glamour." It contrasts raw, honest textures with lush, soft finishes, creating a sanctuary that feels both grounded and ethereal.
Interior Design: The Flow
1. The Main Salon (The "Dusk" Room)
This area is designed for conversation and high-energy socializing.
Flooring: Terrazzo floors with large aggregate chips in shades of coral, seafoam, and sand.
The Bar: A monolithic, curved bar made of green onyx that is backlit to emit a soft, aquatic glow. It is topped with unpolished brass that will patina over time.
Ceiling: A vaulted ceiling featuring exposed wooden trusses painted a deep, midnight blue, disappearing into the shadows to create height and drama.
2. The Sunken Lounge (The "Glow" Room)
A few steps down from the main salon lies a more intimate area inspired by 1970s conversation pits.
Seating: Plush, velvet banquettes in burnt orange and mustard yellow wrap around the perimeter.
Centerpiece: A suspended light installation made of amber glass orbs, mimicking the setting sun.
Carpeting: A custom inset rug with an organic, topographic pattern reminiscent of sand ripples.
3. The Terrace (The "Horizon" Deck)
The outdoor space blurs the line between indoor and out using floor-to-ceiling glass slider doors that remain open whenever weather permits.
Landscaping: Potted fishtail palms and birds of paradise create natural privacy screens.
Fire Features: sleek, linear fire pits run parallel to the water views, providing warmth and a primal focal point as the evening deepens.
Materiality & Palette
The material selection focuses on tactile contrasts—rough against smooth, cool against warm.
Element Material Selection Sensory Effect Palette Ochre, Terracotta, Sage, Midnight Blue Warmth, nostalgia, and twilight calm. Metals Brushed Brass, Copper Reflects the warm sunset light. Woods Pecky Cypress, Rattan, Walnut Adds texture and historic "Old Florida" roots. Fabrics Linen, Velvet, Bouclé Softens the hard architectural edges. Stone Travertine, Green Onyx Cool to the touch; evokes the coastline.
The Sensory Experience
Lighting: The lighting scheme is circadian. During the day, natural light filters through the breeze blocks. As sunset approaches, hidden warm-dim LEDs take over, and the onyx bar begins to glow. By late night, the space is lit almost entirely by candlelight and the amber glass installation.
Sound: A curated playlist shifts from Bossa Nova and Balearic beats in the afternoon to deep house and soul-funk as the night progresses.
Scent: A signature scent is diffused through the HVAC system—notes of jasmine, sea salt, and worn leather.
